ALICE installs infra-red Free Electron Laser (FEL).


ALICE was shutdown on Monday 16th November in order to install the infra-red Free Electron Laser (FEL). The first item to be installed was the undulator and vacuum vessel which is at the heart of the FEL (see photo). The permanent magnet undulator has been loaned to ALICE by Jefferson Laboratory. With their permission ASTeC and TD staff have now converted this undulator from a fixed gap to a variable gap device so that the infra-red wavelength emitted by the FEL can be easily tuned without having to alter the electron beam energy
