EMMA Commissioning Workshop - 1-4 December 2009

EMMA (Electron Model for Many Applications) will be the first demonstration of a revolutionary new type of particle accelerator, the world’s first non-scaling FFAG. This exciting proof of principle trial, now under construction at Daresbury (see photo), is an important step towards possible future applications in neutrino research, hadron therapy or even energy generation from sub-critical reactors. The project is funded by a Basic Technology grant to a consortium (PI = Roger Barlow from Manchester University), supplemented by ASTeC investment.  It relies on the ALICE facility for its injected electron beams.  As the commissioning date in Spring 2010 draws nearer intensive preparations are underway and as part of this a major planning workshop has just been held at Daresbury, hosted by the Cockcroft Institute and with attendance from HEIs plus a number of overseas experts, seen in the photograph. This highly successful meeting updated progress since previous reviews and addressed outstanding scientific and technical issues. Everyone now looks forward to the difficult challenges ahead.
