European Synchrotron Light Sources Workshop, ESLS XVII.

Deepa Angal-Kalinin, Susan Smith and Peter Williams from ASTeC participated in this year’s workshop which was held in DESY, Hamburg on the 26-27 November 2009.  At this meeting, representatives of the major synchrotron radiation sources in Europe discussed accelerator issues important to the design, operation and development of sources. Hot topics included the effects of insertion devices and beam coupling.  ASTeC presented new simulation results showing the optimisation of the beam properties for a recirculation option for the New Light Source (NLS) and outlined the progress in commissioning and development of the ALICE light source R&D facility at Daresbury. The workshop included a tour of the newly commissioned PETRA III light source as well as a visit to the FLASH free electron laser (FEL) facility which is currently undergoing a significant upgrade. The picture below shows the construction work on the 100m x 30m x 20 m deep injector cavern for the new powerful X-ray FEL facility, XFEL as seen during the tours. On Monday 30th November the XFEL project celebrates another milestone with the signing of the state convention at  the Hamburg town hall.
