NLS
NLS is a national project to study a design for a next generation light source in the UK. It is a collaboration between STFC, Diamond Light Source and various UK universities. ASTeC provides a major part of the source design study effort that will result in a Technical Design Report in Autumn 2009.
Fundamental physics studies include conceptual solutions with proposed layouts that allow full start-to-end simulations modelling the electron beam from the gun source through the superconducting linac to the free electron laser radiation delivery. The team has also generated innovative solutions to these free electron lasers.
In parallel with these beam simulations the team also contributes technical design skills to definition of major components, including the photo-gun and superconducting linac. It will also be necessary to prepare a comprehensive costing of NLS to accompany the TDR.
