Technology Research & Development

ASTeC staff are engaged in underpinning accelerator technology R&D programmes in their areas of expertise.  The outcomes from such work are applied to a range of projects, including in some cases industrial collaborations.

The Radiofrequency and Diagnostics Group has invested in the infrastructure for design, construction and testing of superconducting RF structures and plans further development of such capabilities.  It also operates advanced instrumentation laboratories, for example for cold testing of components (ie characterisation at low power levels).

The Magnetics and Radiation Sources Group is responsible for a magnet measurement laboratory with a number of benches.  It is also developing designs for sophisticated special magnets such as a superconducting undulator and permanent magnet systems.

The Vacuum Science Group operates advanced facilities for development and testing of UHV and XHV components.  There is an R&D programme that has generated new understanding and solutions in the field of Non-evaporable Getter (NEG) pumping.

All of the Groups use this expertise to assist other projects, including those in collaboration with overseas laboratories.
